WALT use precise nouns to add detail for our reader.

This week in writing we have been using precise nouns to make our writing more specific for the reader.

We took a paragraph and changed the nouns from general nouns to precise nouns.

Here is an example.

In the weekend I had to do lots of shopping with my Mum. We went to the shop diary to get some food. We also went to look for a present for my cousin’s birthday. I had to choose between a doll and a soft toy. After that we went to the shop to buy some clothes, I got two new items and a pair of shoes. Because I had been so good, mum took me to the shop to buy an ice block. Lucky me!

Athletics - Running

During week 1 and 2 we have had Andy come in and coach us on our sprinting skills.  In week 1 we learned about sprinting technique and in week 2 we focused on our starts.

There are 7 key skills we need to increase our sprinting skills.

  1. Eyes straight ahead.
  2. Light feet.
  3. High knees.
  4. Bent arms.
  5. Cheek to cheek arms.
  6. Run straight.
  7. Run tall.
Check out these photos of us practicing. Can you tell which skill we were practicing?

The skills we focused on for our starts are:

  • Look straight ahead (not at the starter!)
  • What to do on the starters calls (Take your mark, set, go)
  • Improving our reaction time (the amount of time it takes us to get moving once we hear the signal to go).
We are very excited about athletics day which is coming up in week 5! We will be able to put all of our athletics skills to use.

Maths in Flox Class

This week we have been working hard on making sure we have mastered a strategy we can use for solving addition and subtraction problems.

We have really enjoyed working through problems, on our own and with others.

WALT have a conversation in te reo Māori.

In Flox Class we have been learning to have a conversation in Maori. We used our conversations to create movies. Our movies are set around Hay Park School. Have a look and see if you can understand Peeana and Manahal's conversation.

We are learning to use te reo Maori. We are still learning to pronounce some of the words in our conversations. Please give us some tips if you have any!

My Writing Learning Goals

This term in writing I am going to be working on two goals.

They are:
Use short and long sentences.
Include dialogue to tell the reader more about the characters and to add evidence in non-fiction.

I will know I have achieved these goals when I can show evidence of these in my writing.

Lost in space!

This term, we are learning about space. On Tuesday the teachers went to Stardome in preparation for our trip in week 8.

Do you recognise this awesome astronaut we saw there?

Basketball with Miss Hopcroft

This week in PE we were learning some large ball skills with Miss Hopcroft. We learnt how to dribble the ball, and how do a chest pass.

When you dribble the ball you need to:
 - keep the ball close to you
 - keep the ball just in front of you
 - use soft fingers to bounce the ball.

Today Flox Class and McCahon Class had a ceremony to remove our field of rememberance.

We began with a waiata, Te Aroha. Then listened to the last post while we removed the crosses. It was a very solem occasion.

Lest we Forget

Letters from the Anzac Soldiers

This term we have been learning about the Anzac soliders. We wrote letters
as though we were soldiers in WW1, writing home from the trenches.

This is Jayzel's letter.

Welcome to 2015!

Hi Flox Class of 2015! I hope you are as excited about this year as I am.

I have had a fantastic holiday with my family. My nephew Noah was born on the first of January so that was pertty exciting in my family. I also spent lots of time enjoying the beautiful sunshine we have had.

I have spent the last few days in at school getting ready for this year, and am excited to share our learning space with you all.

I am really looking forward to seeing you learning, and seeing the ways in which you share your learning in 2015.

I can't wait to see you all on Monday.
