Week 7 - Hockey

Hockey is gearing up at the moment. We have our mixed team competing at the zone competition next week and the girls the following week.

Today we were learning how to do a sweep pass. A sweep pass is a powerful pass where you sweep your stick along the ground before it connects with the ball. Check us out in action.

Week 2 - Word Wheel

In Scott Class we are working hard to expand our vocabulary. Today we talked about some of the new words we have been finding in books we are reading. Then we chose 3 words to go on our word wheel (eerie, gulped and mutate) and worked either by ourselves or in pairs to come up with a sentence (or paragraph) using those words. Here are a couple that we came up with.

I gulped down the special serum in the eerie room called
"The room of darkness". It will give me a mutation that will give me the ability to see in the dark to help me finish the puzzle.  - Nikolai

Week 10 - Softball Tournament

On Tuesday last week we went to the Softball Tournament at Mt Roskill Primary School.

On Tuesday 5th of March the softball team went to a softball tournament at Mt Roskill primary school. We were warming up to get ready for our first competition. The first school we played was Mt Roskill Primary School.  When we were getting ready the captains had to play rock paper scissors to see who is batting or fielding. The captain for Mt Roskill Primary School got the chance to choose if his team wanted to bat or field first, he chose for his team to field and our team had to bat. We won our first game of softball, we were so happy that we won! it was amazing! But we were sad that we didn’t make it into the final but at least we won one game.

Week 8 - Flag design

This week New Zealand has been voting on a referendum to see if New Zealanders want to change our flag. We held our own voting at school and the majority of Hay Park Students want to change our flag.

In Scott Class we have been learning about flags and the symbols on the flags and what they represent.

One of our learning tasks this week has been to design a flag that represents our class. This is Osana's flag design.

She has included art work from our artist Ian Scott, the stars for our Chromebooks and our class photo to show who is in our class.

Are you a leapling?

Today is the 29th of February, did you know we only have the 29th of February every four years!

For the children in Scott class this is only the third time they have experienced had the 29th of Feb.

Today we did watched a youtube clip which explains why leap years occur, then we wrote our own explanations.

 Here is one that was a collaborative effort from Tai, Osana, Manahal, Alaskah and Sami.

 What is a leap year? We discovered that a leap year is a year that has 366 days. A normal year has 365.25 days, but we can’t have a day that is only six hours (or .25 of a day) long! So we have a thing called a Leap Year. Leap years occur every four years. They occur because we have to catch up the extra six hours per year. Because it takes 365 days to orbits the sun.Six hours each year for four years adds up to 24 hours which is the same as one day. So in a leap year we have an extra day. It is the 29th of February. A Leapling is someone who was born on the 29th of February. They only have their birthday every four years.
