Week 6 - Samoan Language Week

Last week was Samoan Language Week. In Scott Class we are very luck to have some expert Samoan Language speakers. They helped us learn how to have a basic conversation in Samoan.

We then recorded them and had a go at using a green screen to make it look like they were in Samoa!

We are all very excited about using our green screen to take us all over the world! Keep an eye out to see where we go next.

  3. Hey Scott class my name is Sadie.
I am in room 9 at Waikowhai Primary School.I really LOVE your samoan conversations.
It is a really good opportunity for non-Samoans to learn how to speak a little bit Samoan or how to greet someone in Samoan.Did someone teach you how to speak Samoan?

  4. Hi Scott Class,
I’m Caroline in Room 09 at Waikowhai Primary School. I love the way you had made a Imovie based on Samoan Week. I love how the conversation just kept with the flow. Did anyone just teach you how to speak Samoan fluently?

  6. Hi Scott Class,
We like how you greeted each other in Samoan. We really like how you used the green screen to make it look like you were actually in Samoa. At our school, we also had Samoan Language Week. Did you enjoy it? Our teacher is considering letting us try using the green screen in our class! When you make your next video, we would really like you to speak louder so we can hear you properly. You could also make an English version so we know what you are saying.

My name is Summer. I’m from the West Coast. I love activities such as sports cooking/baking. I’m a year 7 student in Ruma Tahi at Karoro school. Also I quite like speaking in other languages. Right now I’m learning how to speak Māori.

It looks like your students have been working really hard on speaking Samoan. As much as I liked watching it there's just this one thing, you can't really hear the students speaking unless you plug in headphones and turn them right up. Other than that it's amazing! Don't forget to check out my blog here's the link just copy and paste it in the search bar. http://karorosummerm.blogspot.co.nz/

    Thanks again

I am Greanne from the South Island West Coast. I really like how instead of celebrating Māori language week you celebrate Samoan Language Week. I think it was a smart idea to use a green screen to make you look like you were in Samoa. I can’t wait to see what more cool ideas you can come up with using the green screen!! Have you got some tips on how to use a green screen?

The second video had some sort of nose in the background which made it hard to hear. If you do a video like this next time maybe you could speak a little bit louder and if you make a video about a different language again maybe you could place what they are saying at the bottom in English, so know what you are saying.

  11. Dear Scott Class,

I think it is so cool that you are studying the Samoan language for Samoan Language Week! Its really cool how you videoed your learning and shared it on your blog.

I really liked how you had the green screen behind you to make it look like you were in Samoa I love that idea! I also liked how you had different members of your class is that video so you all got to try and senses and made to different conversations! Well done!

Next time though you might want some Samoan music playing in the background to complement the background. Another idea is you could be wearing Samoan outfits, with all that can you get anymore Samoan without going to Samoa? ;D

My name is Kieran I go to Karoro school. I really enjoyed looking at you blog but the thing I enjoyed the most was the Samoan video I like it because you spoke clearly and because of the background of the beach you put in it. Maybe next time the person who is holding the camera could hold it more still.

Maybe you could go visit my blog here is the link.

I really like how you used the green screen to make it look like you were actually in Samoa. I also like that you were looking at each other while talking so it really looked like you were having a normal conversation in Samoa.

In my school I have an extension Maori class and we made videos talking in maori about the weather. We also drew and painted a picture of New Zealand for the background.

Next time you could put english subtitles so we can understand what you are saying while you are saying it. You could also speak a little bit louder I couldn't quite hear. Other than that I loved your videos.

  14. Kia Ora Scott Class/Room Eight,

My name is Poppy-blu I am from the West Coast, South Island. Wow you can speak Samoan! That is very impressive, I think that learning Samoan language would be very cool to learn. I have no clue how to speak that fluent with samoan let alone any words in Samoan!

I think that using a green screen would be very fun and exciting. You did well using a green screen! It’s really cool how you made them look like they were in Samoa. Those girls are very very talented!

In the first video I can hear the girls clearly but in the second video it is quite hard to hear all of you. Make sure you are loud enough so that the people watching it can hear you. Other than that I am very impressed with all of you. Ka Pai!

  16. Dear Scott's class

I enjoyed listening to your Samoan conversation. The backgrounds were very bright and sunny like a beach which was amazing and I almost thought you were actually on a beach! I liked listening to you speak in Samoan language but I was thinking it would be good if you could tell us what you were actually saying so we could understand.

Another little thing that could be changed is maybe you could speak up a bit on the second one because I was on full volume and I could only hear tiny bits of chatter. Thanks for giving us an amazing presentation of a Samoan conversation.

My name is Jayden and I’m from Karoro School, New Zealand.

I really liked your background and it really suits the theme. This is important because if you had a background that didn’t match it wouldn't go with it.

You did very well speaking in another language. For me it would be very hard so you must of had to practice for a long time.

I think you could speak up on them both if you do it again, because it was quite hard to hear the second one. I could also see that it was Samoa Week with all the Samoa posts.

Also if you would like to check out my blog you can click here My blog is a very good blog so I reckon you should check it out if you want. Here's the link if the other one doesn't work:http://karorojaydent.blogspot.co.nz/

  19. Kia Ora Scott’s Class,

My name is Bradley and I am from the West Coast. I really enjoyed your videos you made. Over the past I have only commented on your blog once and today I am going to comment again. The only stuff I commented on was - the hockey photos and this video on Samoan conversation 1&2.

I really enjoyed your video, but there was something else you could have included, a translation of Samoan language with English and you could of put the words they were saying at the bottom of the screen in English. That is what you could of included.

While you have being doing that our class has been doing maths art using geometry. When we did our artwork we had to include rotation, reflection and translation and it had to have 3 colours. When I was finished It looked stunning.

That was a great video you made. Once again I really enjoyed you
videos if you want to have a look at my blog here is the link.
