Are you a leapling?

Today is the 29th of February, did you know we only have the 29th of February every four years!

For the children in Scott class this is only the third time they have experienced had the 29th of Feb.

Today we did watched a youtube clip which explains why leap years occur, then we wrote our own explanations.

Here is one that was a collaborative effort from Tai, Osana, Manahal, Alaskah and Sami.

What is a leap year? We discovered that a leap year is a year that has 366 days. A normal year has 365.25 days, but we can’t have a day that is only six hours (or .25 of a day) long! So we have a thing called a Leap Year. Leap years occur every four years. They occur because we have to catch up the extra six hours per year. Because it takes 365 days to orbits the sun.Six hours each year for four years adds up to 24 hours which is the same as one day. So in a leap year we have an extra day. It is the 29th of February. A Leapling is someone who was born on the 29th of February. They only have their birthday every four years.

Ako Hiko Evening at Wiakowhai Primary School

On Wednesday and Thursday last week Nikolai, Saunoa, Hulita and Lorna attended and spoke at Ako Hiko parent evenings at Waikowahi Primary School. They spoke about using their Chromebook to help with their learning, how sharing their learning on their blog enables them to have a wide audience for their learning and how we use our class site to make all of our learning visible.

They spoke well in front of large groups of adults. Ka pai team!

Week 3 Term 1 - A busy week!

This week has been full on with lots happening for Scott Class!

On Tuesday we had our Kawa of Care evening, where parents came along and learnt about the power of our devices, how to help us stay Cyber Smart at home and how to look after our Chomebooks.

Wednesday and Thursday we had students attend and speak at the Waikowhai Primary parent evening.

Thursday we also had our first session of Softball coaching with Dave where we learned about the Monkeydile catch, how to use a butter fly catch and throwing over arm! No wonder we were tired at the end!

And we have been busy working our collaborative art project!

We can't wait to see it all finished.

Week 2 Term 1 - Consultation Hui

This week has been a great opportunity to meet whanau and discuss their thoughts about our school. During our meet the teacher evening we held a consultation hui where whanau had the opportunity to talk about the things they feel our school is doing well, and any areas they feel we could improve. It was such a boost to hear so many positive things from our community.

It is always great to have an opportunity to talk to our families, talking about the year ahead. It is going to be busy in Scott Class. We have a lot of responsibilities which we are loving at the moment. It makes me really proud of our class when just about everyone volunteers for everything. Such great leadership in the making!

Week 1 Term 1 - Welcome to Scott Class!

Week 1 got off to a great start in Scott Class!

We have loved our first week in our new classroom which is attached to the library. We have lots of new books at Hay Park this year and Scott Class has made the most of being so close to the library by reserving new books to read as soon as they are able to be issued.

This year the context for our learning is Challenge and this term we are looking at ourselves and our Identity. Our school value this term is resilience, which meas the ability to recover quickly from difficulties. We are really looking forward to lots of great learning this year.

We are really excited about being Y6 this year and taking on leadership roles and responsibilities in 2016! It is so great to see ALL children keen to take on these roles.

Next week is our first class assembly, please check back to see us in action!
